Regional Taiko Gathering

We got back from holidays just in time to take part in the Regional Taiko Gathering at Capilano College. Things got off to a bang with a tribute to Sensei Seiichi Oguchi of Suwa Daiko who was killed in a traffic accident a few months ago. A few of us old-timers played Hiryu Sanda Gaiishi – a piece that we learned almost 30 years ago, and haven’t played in almost as long . . . do I look like I know what I’m doing? I have to admit, I cheated. The night before I looked up the piece on You Tube and what do you know – it was there, played by a huge group of students in Dublin of all places:

I led one workshop on the weekend – improvising through mask work. I had a great time. I think the people who took the workshop enjoyed it as well. They’re smiling, anyway. Maybe because it’s over!
