This just in from my friend Take of the Coalition to Save the Legacy Sakura of Oppenheimer Park:

Dear supporters of the Coalition to Save the Legacy Sakura of Oppenheimer Park, thank you for your continued support for the goal of the coalition. It has been just over two months since I came to know about the city’s plan to uproot and remove our pioneer issei’s legacy sakura on Powell Grounds (Oppenheimer Park). The Board of Parks and Recreation has responded to the coalition’s concern to a certain extent, but so far demonstrated unchanged oversight. They are still proposing to cut three sakura at the present time.

At this time, we are planning to sponsor a reception for our community members, the local organisations & residents and the stakeholders of the Oppenheimer Park, on Saturday, June 28th, between 4pm and 6pm at Vancouver Buddhist Temple. The Park Board has indicated to be part of the event. It is for the coalition to socialise, build goodwill & friendship and promote dialogue on the issue. It will be an opportunity for us to recognise your support and update you. It also looks you will have a chance to address your concern directly to the staff of the Park Board.

There will be finger-food prepared and a 3-to-5-minute-video presentation – thanks to the effort of Linda Ohama and Brian Matsuo.

Thanks again for your inspiration and encouragement.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the reception,

Takeo Yamashiro, Co-chair
Coalition to Save the Legacy Sakura of Oppenheimer Park
